1 in 5 'young' drivers not insured A report published by the Motor Insurers Bureau says that 1 in 5 'young people' (defined as being between 17 and 20) drive without insurance. The same report also showed that one in ten young drivers were not aware that motor insurance is a legal requirement. Not having proper insurance cover is a criminal offence. The research revealed that as many as 250,000 people between the ages of 17 and 20 are driving without insurance and that this group is four times over-represented in claims to the MIB. The chief executive of the MIB, Ashton West is reported as saying “Britain has one of the worst records in Europe for driving uninsured – around 5% of the population. Young people make up a significant number of uninsured drivers and with one in five newly qualified drivers having an accident in the first year of driving" Commenting on the report, the Director of AA Insurance, Simon Douglas said: “Uninsured driving is not a victimless crime. Young drivers are 10 times more likely to be involved in a collision than more experienced drivers. If they have no insurance, any claim has to be met by the MIB which in turn, is funded by honest insurers.” For the full article on the MIB website click here |
