Use vans ? Know your limits

Many businesses use vans yet a survey by Vauxhall in 2008 revealed that 85% of drivers didn't know the speed limits relating to them - the majority mistakenly believing them to be the same as for cars. Some 72% didn't know the limits relating to single carriageway roads, 52% didn't know the limit for dual carriageways and amazingly 56% getting the motorway speed limit wrong by underestimating it.

As well as causing problems, and points for the driver of these vans it would not be unreasonable for an employee to cite their employer as being liable for not ensuring they had received training and thus were responsible for the prosecution - something the 'no win, no fee' solicitors are sure to catch on to.

'Car derived vans' is the phrase used in law, and relates to a vehicle that MUST be derived from a car design, such as the Astra van, Escort van and MUST also be below 2,000 kg GVW.

Anything over that - Transits, Vivaros, Boxers are most definitely NOT a car derived van and therefore subject to different speed limits.

In short, unless a lower speed limit is posted (but there are exceptions) the limits are :-

Vehicle type Single Carriageway Dual Carriageway Motorway
No trailer
Motorbike / car / car derived van 60mph 70mph 70mph
Goods vehicles below 7.5 tonnes 50mph 60mph 70mph
With trailer
Motorbike / car / car derived van 50mph 60mph 60mph
Goods vehicles below 7.5 tonnes 50mph 60mph 60mph
